Totally abnormal behavior in workplace met with very normal response

Imagine you’re at work and you decided one day at a staff meeting to start talking trash to your new boss. Right in front of all your colleagues. You really get on a roll, and start telling him he’s not qualified for his job, and begin insulting his boss, too. Truly bananas behavior. When your boss patiently tries to respond, you interrupt him and insist that he’ll never be welcome in the workplace there. Then, you send a recording of your bullying outburst to news reporters!

Would you expect to still have your job the next day? Of course not.

But in the Trump-deranged world we’ve lived in for much of the last decade, this sort of behavior was considered normal among far left members of the media. The scenario I just described above is precisely what unfolded this week when the new executive producer of 60 Minutes held his first staff meeting to introduce himself to his employees.

Scott Pelley, a pompous and self-important on-air correspondent, openly mocked and insulted his new boss, Nick Bilton, and Bilton’s boss, Bari Weiss, who was brought in about a year ago to be the editor in chief of CBS News. You need to read some of Pelley’s choice quotes in the meeting.

A little more than 24 hours later, Pelley was fired — although it’s worth pointing out that Bilton and Weiss made every effort to smooth things over with petulant anchor. What’s interesting here is that Pelley wasn’t fired for being a bad journalist — when it came to political stories, he was certainly a partisan hack.

He was fired for workplace misconduct. For performative insubordination. For being an insufferable bully in a staff meeting. For basically doing a 60 Minutes segment on malignant narcissism and making himself the lead of the story 😂 .

Many on the left are howling that Pelley was fired because Bari Weiss is somehow doing Trump’s bidding, which is obviously absurd and a distraction from the truth.

But Trump actually does have something to do with Pelley’s firing. As I’ve mentioned many times in this Sunday edition, Trump is creating the conditions for normalcy to return to many facets of American life. Just think about the insanity we’ve witnessed in the wake of COVID and the George Floyd riots. Behavior like what Pelley displayed in that meeting became a new normal in much of corporate America. The inmates were running the asylum. But not anymore.

With normalcy returning to America, Bari Weiss could feel confident in making what at one point in this country would have been perceived as a 💯% normal business decision: to fire an employee who went on an unhinged rant during a staff meeting. Before TDS broke nearly half of the brains in America, the headlines about what happened at 60 Minutes this week would’ve focused entirely on a longtime anchor having a shock meltdown, not that it was somehow controversial to fire him for doing so.
